Reflection Exercise 8.1

Blogging: Understanding nonverbal communication - Discussions in COMM11003 Term 1  , week 8 ,2015

Non verbal communication is one of the important parts while we interact with someone. It is the body language given by our facial expression, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice—that speak the loudest or quietly which gives most strong impact and can build better relationships than through verbal communication. If someone wants to become a better communicator, it’s important to become more sensitive not only to the verbal language and also towards others body language, but also to your own body cues and language. Non verbal communication impacts more and this creates strong relationship with other people.

Even when you're silent, you're still communicating nonverbally (Segal). People are more likely to understand with their body language and facial expression rather than their words. Their facial expression represents what they are going to say. In my case, I put a big smile on my face and cross my arms if standing whenever i communicate face to face with someone.

I think this habit is good whenever we communicate with someone. Crossing the arms and putting a big smile on face is the act of expressing politeness and well mannered person. But if I cross my arms while giving the presentation then it will give negative impact on audience and thinks I am not used to in presentation. If we want to communicate effectively, avoid misunderstandings, and enjoy solid, trusting relationships both socially and professionally, it’s important to understand how to use and interpret nonverbal signals.

Reflection Exercise 7.2

Blogging: Criticizing a great speech – Discussion in COMM11003 Term 1, week7, 2015

This article reviews the speech given by the great actor Leonardo DiCaprio in “UN Climate summit”. He talks about the climate change, global warming and its effects towards human beings. The speech is clearly delivered with excellent speed, volume, and pitch. At first he clarifies the effects of global warming and then he simply defend himself that human attitude towards it is not serious.

In the speech he speaks politely and he put himself beneath than audience in order to face challenging audience and prove live like a human being. Dwyer (2013, p. 443) suggests to ‘respond honestly and assertively…without anger or defensiveness’ if you are faced with a challenging audience member or question, stay calm, be polite and do not be drawn into a defensive argument. He was presenting in front of leaders, politician and other challenging people so, his closing was influent, spirit, effective that he dominates audience that “I pretend for living you do not.” This proves his speech was spirit and knows the audience thought.
Leonardo was looking towards every audience but his body and hand motion is quite less. This shows that he is still nervous in front of leaders of world though the way he delivered his speech was fabulous. He clarified his purpose with the problems and then he explored that human are the reasons behind such problems and even human are responsible for making it better. Context was about the serious purpose  so speech was motivational.

REFLECTION EXERCISE 3.2

Communication is the means of exchanging of information or any data by speaking, writing or by using any other medium between two or more people. Communication technology has become one of the significantly important in the field of business, education, politics etc. In the modern era there are different kinds of communication technologies and i use mobile and internet services more.

There many significant benefits of these communication technologies. These technologies had made us much easier and less time consuming to communicate with relatives, friends through voice call, message, video chat etc around the world. E-mail and messaging helps students to contact with friends or instructor whenever they want for any guidance and information regarding assignments they are working with. Similarly, through different networking sites we can get many knowledge & things going around the world. Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Viber, & video conferencing such as skype allows talking with loved ones over vast distance. However, there are some drawbacks regarding these technologies such as enables rudeness, the lost art of conversation, cyber crimes, spoils language & also sometimes problems may arise in signals which makes bit irritating.

In the ancient world communication technology is regarded as basic needs of the life. Whole world is running through it so life is too hard to live without it. Even i cannot live without these technologies because most of the times I use devices to communicate with friends, relatives & also to even know the things going around the world. 21st century is almost based on technology so without communication technologies it will be like stone era.

In conclusion, Communication technology is most important basic needs of our daily life. So, we should upgrade it according to our needs.
